Yesterday it was supposed to be 100 degrees here, so Jess Bandstra and I decided it would be a good day for us, together with Kate and Koda, to take a day trip to the coast, where it was supposed to only get into the 80s. As it turned out, the temperature was never got higher than the 60s on the coast and we were a bit chilly, but it was still a nice break from the heat inland.
First we met for lunch in Yachats ("YAh-hahts"), which is midway between Florence (directly west of Eugene where the Bandstras live) and Newport (west of Corvallis). We ate at my favorite Yachats restaurant (also the only restaurant I've eaten at there, at least as an adult), Grand Occasions Deli.
After lunch we drove to the parking lot of the "hobbit trail," a beautiful half-mile path that tunnels through the brush and trees until it suddenly opens on the beach. I let Koda off-leash for a little while and he half-ran/half-danced up and down the beach (I was thankful when I was able to catch him again later). Jess and Kate and I walked at a more leisurely pace, and then later Jess and Koda and I sat and rested a bit while Kate played in the sand before we ascended back up the hobbit trail to our cars. Altogether we had a lovely day.

I like the action shot of Koda! (Or "Do-da! Do-da!" as Kate called him).
